Garbe Mohammed - the Bead Man of GhanaGarbe Mohammed is a fourth generation bead merchant, and has sold and traded beads across West Africa his whole working life. He has a stall at the Koforidua beads market, in eastern Ghana, but travels throughout west Africa, including Togo, Benin, Nigeria and Mali in search of rare beads to add to his stock, as well as his precious personal collection. Beads are not only his business but his passion. I met him on a trip to Ghana, when he shared some of his most interesting and valuable beads - including a seven layer chevron and Roman face - as well as the history of trade beads. Soko: The threads of a new lifeThe town of Maungu lies on the road to Mombasa from Nairobi in Kenya. There's little employment for young women here - some are forced to become prostitutes, their customers the long distance truck drivers moving cargo from the port across east Africa. Soko was founded by Joanna Maiden to give people in the area an alternative. Their stitching school teaches women tailoring - and when they graduate, they have the chance to work in the Soko factory. The workshop is based in Wildlife Works, a charity that works to provide employment to people who might otherwise resort to poaching. Soko makes clothes that are sold around the world by Asos - Michele Obama is just one of the celebrities that have worn clothes made here.
